BREAKING: Salvador Officially Named Captain

By Jeff O’Connor

The New Jersey Devils have officially named Bryce Salvador the captain for the 2013 season, head coach Pete DeBoer announced this afternoon.

Patrik Elias and Ilya Kovalchuk remain the alternates.

Below are are quotes from Salvador to the media after practice on Thursday:

“It’s a tremendous honor.  I think it’s just a huge compliment for an organization like New Jersey with the success and just the history they have and all the previous captains, for them to select me as the next captain was just an honor and sometimes it’s tough to put words to.”

“It’s been a really interesting last two years for me personally to miss a season and not really now what was going to happen, what the future was going to be. Then, the team has a good year last year and now to be named captain, I don’t know what the odds would have been for that in Vegas two years ago. But, that being said, it’s the team around you too that builds the captain. This organization, it’s the coaching staff, it’s the players, it’s management, in their own way they all have their say.  So, it’s something that you have to build and you have to have support of your teammates.”

“The group of guys in here is such a special group of guys. I think there’s so many important pieces, so many leaders in their own way. So, I felt it could have been a lot of guys. So, I didn’t really know.”

“I lead by example. Every now and then I like to give it to a few guys. But, I’ve been characterized a lot as being a silent leader. You come in and just make sure you’re ready to go each day, so that part isn’t going to change.”

Salvador went on to say that he was highly influenced by former St. Louis Blues teammate and fellow blueliner, Al MacInnis.

One last quote, this time from the man who made the decision to make him the captain…DeBoer:

“The strength, I think, of our group is the depth of leadership in that room. As tough as it was to pick a captain, it was tough to not put A’s on certain guys too. That’s a real strength for us. I think whomever I picked would have been right. Sal is a consummate pro, leads by example and has developed into a great leader and a great player in this league. So, it was a good choice by us, I think.”
